Prof. Myrtles first training in martial arts was in 1969 in Concord CA, with one of his close high school friends Jim Jones. Most of the training at that time took place in a garage or backyard.  Shortly after that Alan joined the Concord school of karate under James Nordlie, and five other black belts in the no nonsense martial art of Kajukenbo.  Alan trained in this system until 1976.  During this time Alan also trained in Judo at Diablo Valley College and Tae Kwon Do at U.C. Berkley under Kim Miew. In 1976 Alan moved to Redding CA, and met Kenpo black belt Jim Mitchell who introduced Alan to  Grand Master Ed Parker.  Alan opened a dojo in Shasta Lake City, in November 1976.  Alan trained with Jim Mitchell and occansionally with Ed Parker at seminars that Jim put on, and during trips to Pasadena CA.  In 1978 Alan earned his 1st degree black belt with Mr. Parker on the board, that same year Alan moved his school to Reddng on Hiltop Dr.

In 1981 Alan met Richard Huk Planas who was one of Ed Parkers highest ranking black belts and who was instramental in helping Grand Master Parker standardize the Kenpo system.  In 1986 Alan began working with at risk youth at a private school, which worked with kids with behavioral problems.  Alan continued to work with kids in this field for approx, 19 years.  Alan began training with Huk and his still his Sifu to this day.  Alan began competing in Karate and Martial Art tournaments in 1973 since then he has won numerous local, regional, state, national and international tournaments.  In 1999 Prof. Myrtle with Gordon Buck opened the Anderson CA, school on Westcenter st.  In 2006 the school moved to 2250 Barney Rd. where it is still today.  In 2007 Prof. Myrtle began training in the Doce Pares Eskrima system under Guru Anthony Kleeman who trains under Grand Master Cacoye Canette.  Prof. Myrtle found that Eskrima fits very well with Kenpo.  Over the years Prof. Myrtle has been exposed to many different martial arts, but teaches primarly Kenpo Karate.  Prof. Myrtle says that Kenpo is one of the most complete and comprehesive martial arts systems that I have seen, with alot of thought put into real practical self defense and universal rules of combat.
